The Birthday Club Since meeting at the Yale MFA program in the late 1980s, Marion Belanger, Mary Berridge, Ann Burke Daly, Laura Letinsky, Tanya Marcuse, and Jennette Williams (1952-2017) have met to discuss artwork, ideas, the art world and everyday life. Their meetings started thirty years ago, and over time were formalized into this collective, focused on dialogue and critique, co-mentoring, studio visits, and sustaining their creative lives within a community.
Accomplishments collectively include Guggenheim Fellowships, Duke Center for Documentary Studies book awards, a Whitney Museum of American Art Independent Study Program fellowship, a Watson fellowship, an Aaron Siskind Fellowship, Anonymous Was a Woman and Art Matters Grants. Residencies include Yaddo and MacDowell, 8 monographs and innumerable exhibitions, galleries, and collections at the Metropolitan Museum, The George Eastman Museum, The Getty Center, Hermes Photography Collection, the Brooklyn Museum, the Mumbai Photography Festival. University teaching includes Bard, Princeton, University of Chicago, Vassar, Wesleyan, Hartford Art School, and CUNY. In 2019, the collective published a limited edition folio in an edition of six, which has been acquired by MoCP, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, the Yale University Art Gallery, and MASSArt Rare Book Library.
